Contents

In the foundation course, a dining table chair will be reupholstered using traditional methods. It is advised that course participants bring their own chair, which needs to be suitable for traditional top-stuffing with brass coil springs. An antique chair is preferred, having a valuable restored furniture piece after finishing the course.
If you would not have a suitable one, we have dining table chairs for sale.

This basic course consists of the following parts;

  1. Removing the old covering, filling and entire inner work without damaging the wood.
  2. Cleaning the wood and gluing simple frame joints. Repairing more serious damage to the chairs can be carried out by a professional furniture maker at a charge.
  3. Making a cutting scheme for the new fabric to be put on.
  4. Applying jute woven webbing strands.
  5. Placing and consequently lashing brass coil springs.
  6. Placing and tensioning Hessian (coarse cloth woven from jute fibre).
  7. Cleaning botanical ‘crin vegetal’- filling and applying it as a layer on the hessian – first stuffing
  8. Covering the crin vegetal with jute cloth.
  9. Stitching through of the seat using twine, securing the crin vegetal.
  10. Stitching the seat’s edges twice with twine creating a strong roll.
  11. Applying a layer of crin vegetal or horsehair creating the desired shape of the seat – second stuffing.
  12. Covering the seat with blue/grey wadding followed by tacking a layer of white cotton.
  13. Polishing the wood and covering the seat with a chosen fabric.
  14. Finishing the fabric with oxidised domed decorative nails or trimming gimp.

During classes, attention will be paid to the various styles in furniture periods, different types of wood and knowledge of fabrics.
